Villagers have already had a meteoric year with the release of their debut album, Becoming A Jackal (Domino), in May, which went straight to Number 1 in Ireland and the nomination for this year’s Mercury Music Prize Album Of The Year,  not to mention the heaving tents at both Oxegen and Electric Picnic.

David Celia is one of Toronto’s most experienced independent artists and busiest working musicians, and has consistently built an audience across Canada and Europe, where he’s regularly toured for the past eight years. He returns to Ireland accompanied by his long-time keyboard player Joan Besen, in support of his third album I Tried released earlier this year. The remaining dates are…
Sunday 12 December – Kinsale, Blue Haven
Monday 13 December – Cork, Crane Lane Theatre

Following a sell out and acclaimed run in December 2009 “Here Come The Girls” returns for a turbocharged run across Ireland and the UK, just in time for Christmas 2010. The brainchild of Lulu, this year’s show welcomes back pop diva and star of Channel 5’s  Don’t Stop Believing, Anastacia, and introduces British soul singer and star of M People, Heather Small to the sisterhood. Such has the success been for Here Come The Girls that the producers are in talks with European and North American promoters to take the show oversees in 2011. They will be playing live from the Odyssey Arena, Belfast on Monday 13 December.

Imelda May, born in Dublin and raised in the Liberties, may be an unknown name to some, but to many she is already a superstar. She is unmistakable both in her music (a fusion of surf guitars, blues and rockabilly that wouldn’t be out of place in a David Lynch film)  and her style, with a solitary curl and shock of blonde in her jet black hair. In Ireland her debut album ‘Love Tattoo’ has gone 4x Times Platinum. She has shared a stage with U2, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Van Morrison, Scissor Sisters, Lionel Richie and, most recently, the first lady of rockabilly, Wanda Jackson. Will Imelda May take over the world? Well, its yet to happen, but the rockabilly queen will take over The Olympia, Dublin on Wednesday 15, Thursday 16, Friday 17 and Saturday 18 December.

Delorentos are putting a big countrywide tour in place in support of their new single “Sanctuary” from “You Can Make Sound”. Their provisional list (there’s more to be announced) is:
Thursday 16 December – Dublin, Workmans Club
Saturday 18 December – Westport, Walshes
Sunday 19 December – Derry, Masons

Fight Like Apes will be hotwiring the Transit and running the gaunlet of fascist, jobsworth traffic wardens to bring their finest racket and best evening wear to the good people of Ireland on their “Get A Rip On This Yiz Geebags” tour. The band’s second album – ‘The Body Of Christ And The Legs Of Tina Turner’ os out now and banned in some locations. Dates are…
10th December – Dolans Limerick
17th December – Derry Nerve Centre
18th December – Belfast Spring & Airbrake
19th December – Dundalk Spirit Store
23rd December – Galway Roisin Dubh
27th December – Mullingar Stables

St. Johns Gospel Choir is a multicultural, non-denominational group of singers, set up as a fledgling corps by a member of staff in early 2009 in St. Johns Central College Cork; a college at the heart of the city. Its members are drawn together by a love of gospel sounds and rhythms. Initially, incorporating staff and students from St Johns, it has evolved and expanded to include the wider community, who have become core participants in its development and performances. It has an all-embracing ethos, echoed by its repertoire, which includes Gospel songs and music from all over the world. They play the Cork Arts Theatre on Friday 17 December.

The Script, who have sold out the Aviva Stadium gig in July released details of a very special intimate midnight show at The Olympia Theatre on Friday 17 December. Following a highly successful year the band want to give something back to fans this Christmas with tickets priced at just €10 for this unique show which will benefit two very worthwhile charities; Dublin Simon Community  and Temple Street Children’s Hospital. Please note this is a strictly over 18s event. Doors 11:30pm.

Republic of Loose have confirmed a special Christmas party at The Academy on Friday 17 December. The band have also promised some very special guests appearances. Recent years at The Academy have seen guest performances by Sinead O’Connor, Snow Patrol, Shane McGowan & Damien Dempsey. The Loose’s Christmas parties rock like no other and anyone can show up – Gavin Friday turned up last year with Bono, Simon Carmody & Guggi. Tickets for Republic of Loose’s Most Insane X-mas Party In The History of Human Existence ( as titled by Mik Pyro himelf ) are on sale now.

After returning from the States to open for U2 in Croke Park on their 360 tour in 2009, they spent the latter half of the year writing new material for their fourth album. In May 2010 Republic of Loose flew to Baltimore in the US to begin work on their forthcoming album. Recorded in Wrightway Studios with Steve Wright who had just finished working on the new UNKLE album, the fourth Republic of Loose album is scheduled for an early October release with the lead single pencilled in for September 17th. The album marks a new direction for the Loose with Mik Pyro describing the work as more up tempo and groove orientated. Currently they have a bunch of US Hip-Hop artists shouting out for them (and not just the Baltimore crews) so expect the republic to grow.

UPDATE – Dec 15 2010

Eliza Doolittle has announced details of her first Dublin headline show. The over 14s event will take place at The Academy on Saturday 18 December. (Please note: This is an over 14s show. No alcohol will be served.) Eliza Doolittle was born in Camden, north London 21 years ago. Informed by the stresses of modern city life, teenage aggro, classic pop, old soul and the appeal of simple, strong melodies built from clanking percussion and jazzy licks, Eliza’s eponymous debut album is bursting at the seams with life and enthusiasm and vigour – just like its creator.

Due to unforeseen promotional commitments Eliza Doolittle’s Academy show this Saturday (December 18th) unfortunately is cancelled. Eliza will endeavour to reschedule the date as soon as possible and apologies for any inconvenience caused to fans.

Refunds can made at point of original purchase.

Get in the holiday spirit with The Celtic Tenors glittering Christmas concert called “Home for Christmas”. Daryl, James and Matthew’s unique voices meld to their repertoire of classical, folk, Irish, pop and, of course, Christmas music in Cork Opera House on Sunday 19 December.

Ticketing

Dublin’s Fox Avenue play a post Christmas gig at The Academy on Monday 27 December. There aren’t many new bands that can match Fox Avenue for impact. After just over a year together, the Dublin three-piece have worked their way from bars to arenas, worked with top producers and built an army of loyal fans. Patrick Rhatigan (vocals/piano), Dara Quilty (vocals/guitar) and Sean Maxx (drums) formed the band in mid 2009. They immediately set about building a fan base through social network sites, using Twitter, Facebook and MySpace; the band became an underground online success.  This is an all ages show. Under 15s must be accompanied by parent/guardian. No alcohol served.

R.S.A.G. (aka Rarely Seen Above Ground, aka Jeremy Hickey ) is hosting a New Year’s party The Workman’s Club, Dublin. He will be joined by the Holy Roman Army and Cloud Castle Lake with the The Kilo 1977 spinning tunes in between. R.S.A.G. fans are in for a treat as he will follow his own set with the R.S.A.G. Sound System with The Kilo 1977 providing visual delights and DJing along with Hickey drumming live. Upstairs there will be funk and beats with DJ Brian Harrington (Soul Riot) with guests.

The Decemberists release their new mostly-acoustic album The King Is Dead (Rough Trade Records) on  January 14. And they arepromoting it with a visit to Vicar Street, Dublin on Friday 4 March.

It’s been nearly three years since we’ve heard The Go! Team‘s familiar yet unlikely 3 minute patchwork pieces that turn the sonically unexpected into catchy and commanding songs. They return with Rolling Blackouts, the third in their catalogue of adventure in audio. And they return playing a Dublin show in the Academy on Saturday 5 March 2011.

Noah and The Whale return with the first single from their new album on February 25 2011.  L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N is taken from the band’s third album, Last Night On Earth, which will be released on March 5. Keep an eye on their site as free tracks have been known to appear there. To bookend the new album’s release that will appear in Whelans, Dublin on Sunday 3 April.

“Bloodless Coup” will be the 5th studio album from Bell X1 released on the band’s own Belly Up label in Ireland in April 2011. This follow up to “Blue Lights On The Runway” will be promoted by Paul, David and Dominic with a series of concerts. Confirmed so far are Wednesday 6 April and Thursday 7 April in Vicar Street, Dublin.

Josh Ritter brings his Royal City Band back on tour to Mandela Hall, Belfast on Wednesday 13 April and Vicar Street, Dublin on Friday 15 April 2011. The shows are in support of “So Runs The World Away”, Josh Ritter’s fifth album and his first record to enter the billboard top 50.

Ritter says, “I think of the songs on So Runs the World Away like pictures painted in oil on large canvasses. It’s a record preoccupied with the extremes of scale, from infinitesimal particles to the nearly incomprehensible distances between the head of a pin and a nebula. Where the songs felt large to me, I wanted them to be huge, both musically and lyrically. I wanted them to feel like the steel hulls of massive ships sliding by deeply from below. Where they were small, I concentrated in on the smallest details that I could and we tried to make the music and the words work together. I love writing, and this was the most fulfilling record I’ve yet written.”

O Emperor play a Dublin headline show at The Academy on Friday 15 April. This is to be the Waterford band’s biggest headline date yet. O Emperor have been doing well since their first sold out Dublin headline show at Whelan’s in May, you couldn’t buy a ticket for their recent Sugar Club gig for love nor money. They released their debut album “Hither Thither” in October 2010.
